Chancen schaffen: Zwei Vorschulen für 150 Kinder

The goal

Education for the very young.

  • Together with the organisation SOLidarity with WOmen in DIstress (SOLWODI) Germany e. V., the Sir Peter Ustinov Foundation supports the Early Childhood Development Centres (ECD) in Butere and Mombasa.
  • In these two pre-schools, a total of about 150 children who come from the poorest backgrounds, children of single mothers or children whose parents cannot earn an income due to illness, are taught. Many children are orphans who live with close relatives.
  • This programme aims to provide long-term support for children, care and guidance by social workers, funding for school meals and teachers, as well as financial support for four selected pupils at each project site who are allowed to transfer to primary school after completing ECD pre-school.

The project

Nutrition, Hygiene, Education.

  • At the Butere site, 75 children are cared for. During the pandemic period, it was possible to take in another 30 children who might have starved to death without this opportunity.
  • In hygiene training sessions, the children learn how the transmission of diseases can be reduced and their health can improve if they pay attention to proper hygiene in everyday life. In addition, the teachers advise the parents on how they can improve the families' economic situation, for example, by building up savings reserves, renting small pieces of land or growing beans and maize.
  • At the "Happy Dream" ECD school in Mombasa, 75 pupils are supported by the Sir Peter Ustinov Foundation.
  • The mothers and the local community are also involved in the project. In the long term, the aim is to create a better living space for the children through understanding and support for mothers affected by poverty and prostitution, as well as single mothers.

The success

Competent care and support for the children.

  • The social workers of SOLWODI regularly make house visits to the families of the ECD students twice a month.
  • The children open up and talk about their worries. The teachers and social workers follow up on these concerns and discuss them in individual or group sessions.
  • In the afternoons, the children receive lessons in their mother tongue, Kiswahili. These lessons are important because they bring the children back into contact with their own culture.
  • In addition to the lessons, the team conducts skills training with the children.
  • The "Happy Dream" ECD school cooperates with various health institutes, such as the Utange Dispensary, the Yeshua Medical Centre, the Shimo La Tewa and the Crystal Medical Centre.
  • The school children receive beans, vegetables and rice as basic supplies. The entire project thus makes an important contribution to the children's food security and helps to prevent malnutrition and diseases.
